    April 27, 2009 at 8:30 am Safety issue; We see a lot of tubing in our area. The small children may not have the skill level to avoid the units in case of emergency.

  2. April 28, 2009 at 9:19 am I am just not sure this is the solution. It seems extremely expensive; when no one can guarantee it will work. I want the lake to be clean, not only for the public’s use; but also to maintain property values on the lake.

    However, this sounds like a very expensive experiment to me. As lakefront owners, we pay “extra” taxes to fund the Devil’s Lake Water District. I am concerned our taxes will go up dramatically in order to pay for installation and ongoing maintenance of this endeavor.

    I would like to see other alternatives discussed publicly so we all could have a part in the decision-making process.

    April 27, 2009 at 9:08 am I feel with all of these solabees on the lake that it will put the safety of people in jeopardy. The summer brings lots of activity and familys with young people the navigation will be uncertain and dangerous.
    I do not want to see anyone get injured.

    April 30, 2009 at 2:12 pm The Members of the Devils Lake Water Board need to hear from all property owners that this is an incredibly wrong decision. We got them to listen to us on the ludicrous idea of “lowering the lake level” and now we need to make sure they hear us on this issue too! The Lake that we all enjoy and love will be dangerous for any of us to fish or play on. There has got to be other alternatives!!!!

    I DO NOT PROFESS TO KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT THE LAKE, HOWEVER ONE THING I BELIEVE IN IS THE LAKE SHOULD NOT BE ALTERED OR CHANGED IN AN ATTEMPT TO ADJUST THE LAKE TO SUIT ONE OR A FEW INDIVIDUALS……..INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO ….INSTALLATION OF SOLAR BEES.

    THE PRIMARY OBJECTIONS TO SOLAR BEES ARE;

    1. INITIAL COST OF NEARLY ONE MILLION DOLLARS…..IF THE FIGURES THAT WE, THE TAX PAYERS, ARE LED TO BELIEVE ARE THE FINAL COST. IF ANY OF YOU THINK THAT NO FURTHER EXPENSES WILL BE ATTACHED JUST REVIEW ANY PROJECT THAT OUR GOVERNMENTS CONTRACT FOR AND THEN APPLY YOUR MATH TO THIS ONE. OH,YES, WE SHOULD INVESTIGATE UNDER-THE-TABLE MONIES PAYMENT/S ALSO.

    2 SOLAR BEES WOULD RESULT IN THE DEVALUATION OF ALL PROPERTIES ON AND NEAR THE LAKE. THE DEVALUATIONS WOULD RIGHTFULLY HAVE TO BE BORNE BY ANY AND ALL PERSONS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DASTARDLY INSTALLATION. THIS WOULD INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO THE PERSON/PERSONS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE INSTALLATION BUT ALSO ANY GOVERNMENT AGENCY INVOLVED. THIS COST WOULD PROBABLY AMOUNT TO MANY MILLIONS OF DOLLARS.

    3. I DO NOT KNOW WHY ANYONE THINKS THE SOLAR BEES ARE EVEN NECESSARY. I BELIEVE THAT I AM THE OLDEST OWNER/BUILDER ON THE LAKE. OUR CHILDREN, GRANDCHILDREN AND GREAT GRANDCHILDREN HAVE ALL USED DEVILS LAKE
    DURING THE PAST 50 OR 60 YEARS AND NOT ONE HAS EVER BEEN SICKENED FROM THE LAKE WATER……NOR HAVE I EVER KNOWN OF ANY OF THEIR FRIENDS CONTACTING ALGEA WITH RESULTING ILLNESS. ALSO, I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF ANY PERSONS BEING HOSPITALIZED WITH ALGEA CAUSED ILLNESS.

    4. ON MANY OCCASIONS I HAVE WITNESSED GRASS CARP COMING TO THE SURFACE OF THE LAKE AND CONSUMING THEIR FILL OF ALGEA AND I HAVE NEVER LEARNED THAT ANY OF THE CARP HAVE BEEN SICKENED.

    5. TAKING THE SITUATION A STEP FURTHER, WHAT IF THE SOLAR BEES ARE INSTALLED AND IT IS FURTHER DECIDED BY THIS SELECT FEW TO REMOVE THEM. GUESS WHO GETS TO PAY REMOVAL COSTS———YOU GUESSED IT——LOOK IN YOUR MIRROR.

    6. I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT THE INSTALLATION OF THE SOLAR BEES SHOULD BE LEFT TO THE SOLE CONSIDERATION AND JUDGMENT OF A FEW PERSONS, SOME OF WHOM DO NOT EVEN HAVE PROPERTY ON THE LAKE, IT IS MY FEELING THAT SUCH A DECISION SHOULD BE MADE BY THE LAKESIDE PROPERTY OWNERS……PERIOD

    I would agree with all of the comments above in arguement against these “Solar Bees”. I think Glen Fowler has put a lot of thought into his arguements and I am in agreement with him. I may not have been on the lake as long as Glen has, but I have been here since 1948 and my parents longer that that. I water Ski, Wake Board, Swim, Sail and Fish on this lake and have for years. This IS a safety concern that, in my opinion, is an accident watiting to happen.

    More over, I look out on the lake in the evening and watch the moon rise in the east, and watch the sun come up over it in the morning. I do not want to look out my window at an asthetically OUT OF PLACE SOLAR BARGE that will be the first thing that my eye is drawn too. This is a bad idea. Oh, and if this is funded by some of the “EAR MARK or PORK” from Washington, fix the roads and the water/sewer systems with that money. Good GRIEF!!!

    I have visions of trying to sail around these stupid things. A visual. A beautiful sunset, a sleek sailing boat and a SOLAR BARGE. Hummmm

    Is this a joke, Spend over $1,000,000 on an experiment that will acomplish nothing but a hazard… Our family used to own Devil Lake Golf course, as well as 4 others. These things do not work in ponds let alone in a lake. You would need a hundred of them. All it will do is push the algea to the shore line… Just let me know how much it will cost to stop this thing… There has to be a few attorneys that can tie this thing up for the next 50 years. The next thing they will try to do is outlaw boating activities…
