Nationbuilder Our New Online Environment

NB-Intro.png

Last year the DLNA received official designation from the IRS as a 501.c.3 tax exempt public benefit corporation. This was wonderful news as it means you donations to us can now be declared in your tax computations.  It is also wonderful as we as an organization will not need to pay taxes on the moneys we raise.

This increase in status meant to us that we had to up our game as an organization.  In order to accomplish this we have made the decision to move our operation to a online environment called NationBuilder.  NationBuilder is a “community organizing system”,  a cohesive set of tools to help organizations coordinate their people, web pages, finances, and online communications in pursuit of a goal.  I have used the winter season to complete conversion to this new platform; it was quite an undertaking but now it is behind us.  At first glance you might think this is just a new website, but it is oh so much more.  Let’s take a moment a take a tour of the new dlakeoregon.com .

Take Action / Join

It all begins with you. Perhaps the most powerful aspect of this new online environment is your ability to join in on the DLNA community. To achieve our mission, we believe in combining online and offline activism. We invite all of our neighbors to join in and participate in our online community.

Only registered neighbors have access to certain areas of our online site.  Extra features are contained in the "Action Panel" which appears when logged in the right margins of this site.  There you will be able to interact directly with the Devils Lake Neighborhood Association as well as other DLNA members.  If you have already registered make sure you are logged in to access this additional information.  If you have yet to sign up by entering your email address and clicking the join button in the upper right corner of this site.  Let’s take a look at what else you can find on dlakeoregon.com organized by what’s available to the public and what’s available to members.

AirStream Field Trial

Devils Lake has experienced positive results from the deployment of small AirStream Pro units in shallow, near-shore areas of the lake. These units offer individual lake-front property owners the ability to circulate and aerate areas around their shoreline to reduce stagnation, algae build-up and growth and most importantly, bio-degrade organic “muck” on the bottom in shallow areas where diffuser-based aeration is less efficient and effective.

Larger, commercial grade AirStream Pro units are available and are being considered by the DLWID to supplement a whole lake areation project to address near shore trouble spots. These units offer increased reliability and significantly higher circulation and aeration rates than the smaller units which are currently being used by some lakefront homeowners.

Based on requests from members of the Devils Lake Community, Lake Savers from Richland Michigan will support a trial or pilot installation of a Commercial Grade AirStream Pro 20.15 Unit in 2017.

SOS Workshop a Success

The Save Our Shorelines committee sponsored a workshop at the Oregon Coast Community College on April 8th; attendees found it to be an interesting event. After opening greetings the meeting was initiated by a panel including Kent Norris, Jack's Strayer and Josh Brainard. Kent Norris described the process of his Save Our Shoreline project last year. Partnering with Jim and Cheryl Luebke they restored their entire shoreline across two lots.

Kent described some of the frustrations of getting the required permitting in a project that took two years to complete.  In the end, a nudge by Representative Kurt Schrader put the project over the starting line.

On installation day 18 volunteers from The Devil's Lake Neighborhood Association members helped Kent and his professional crew.  With all the volunteers the project timeline was cut in half. Now Kent waits to see how many plants survived this winter, which was characterized very wet with high lake levels.
